Martin A. Wollenberg passed away at Somerset Health and Rehab Center surrounded by family on June 7, 2016. He was born November 7, 1920 in New Lexington, Ohio. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
Martin was a 1939 graduate of New Lexington High School and following high school, he went to Columbus to become an apprentice to a journeyman plumber. He was drafted in 1942 and left for basic training shortly after that.
Martin served in the 36th Division Texas Unit, of which he was the only Ohio boy in the unit. Martin served in the European Theater during World War II. His tour started in North Africa, moved on to Italy, then France, Germany, and finally Austria. He was honorably discharged in 1945 with the rank of staff sergeant.
After being discharged, he started Wollenberg Plumbing and Heating in 1946 in New Lexington, Ohio. In 1972, he had the opportunity to work as a State of Ohio Plumbing Inspector until he finally retired in1982.
Martin was a lifetime member of the BPO Elks 509 and a member of the American Legion Post 188 and a member of 36th Infantry Division.
Martin met and married Rita Noll and they remained happily married for sixty-three years until the death of Rita in 2009. He is survived by his four children, Kayrn (Dennis) Baker of Alexandria, Marsha (Bill) Patton of New Lexington, Lee Wollenberg of Little Elm, Texas, and Teresa (Dean) Stevenson of Mt. Perry. Martin's grandchildren include Kim (Dave) Carter, Dennis (Melissa) Baker, Justin (Amber) Baker, Keeley (Chad) Miller, Kevin (Colleen) O'Hare, Kyle (Kate) O'Hare, Joshua Stevenson, Tracey (Jeremy) Field.
Martin had twelve great-grandchildren Ashley, Adam, Christian, Emma, Sydney, Savannah, Madison, Reagan, Cameron, Oliver, Greyson, and Vivienne.
He is also survived by his brother Paul (Shirley) Wollenberg of Reynoldsburg and Virginia (Don) Pegago of Florida.
He was able to fully enjoy his retirement by fulfilling his dream of living in Florida during the winter months and returning home in April. In both Ohio and Florida, he was an avid golfer and actually made three holes-in-one during his lifetime. He loved fishing in Canada, Florida and locally with his buddies as well as his grandsons. Martin was a proud grandfather and attended all of his grandchildren's sporting events and programs.
Martin was preceded in death by his parents Joseph and Elizabeth (Bringardner) Wollenberg, brothers and sisters Thomas, Merlin, Neil, Rodney, Adrian, Imogene, Dominica,and Rosemary.
He is also preceded in death by a very special granddaughter Valerie Stevenson.
Martin was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in New Lexington, Ohio. Calling hours for Martin are Monday, June 13th, at Chute and Wiley Funeral Home from 4:00-8:00 p.m. with BPO Elks service at 7:00, Catholic vigil at 7:30 and the American Legion service at 8:00. Mass of the Christian Burial will be held at St. Rose of Lima at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 14th with Father John Reade officiating.Burial will follow in New Lexington Cemetery with Military graveside honors conducted by John Tague Post #188.
