Bernice McCune Obituary

Passed away on October 2, 2014, at age 98, surrounded by her loving family. She was preceded in death by her parents: William & Nannie (Hilliard) Morgan, Sr.; loving husband James A. McCune, Jr.; siblings: William C. Morgan, Jr., Charles Morgan, Nancy (Carl) Decker; son: Lt. Col. James A. McCune III (USAF ret) & great grandchildren: Elisha III & Rose Hellen Nelson. Bernice & Jim McCune moved to St. Petersburg in 1949 from Piqua, OH. Jim was owner of Humpe Roney Realty for many years, and Bernice held a realtor license. She was a loving, full-time homemaker to their 4 children: Patricia (Pierre - dec.)LaMonde; James A. McCune, III - dec. (Mickey); Saranan Lauck (Ted); Mary Delano Newport (William). Bernice, also fondly known as "Gran," was cherished by her 14 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren & 6 great, great grandchildren. Bernice was instrumental in organizing the first St. Paul's School Festival. She was on the Board of Directors for All Children's Hospital Guild, Women's Chamber of Commerce, St. Pete Women's Club, St. Pete Museum of History and Interlock. She was active in the Museum of Fine Arts, Sword of Hope, Stuart Society, Boley's Angels, American Lung Association, & Florida Orchestra. The Boys and Girls Clubs Guild has instituted an annual recognition in her honor-"The Bernice McCune Inspiration Award." In 1986 Bernice was crowned "Queen of Hearts" by the American Heart Assoc., a prestigious honor bestowed annually for outstanding community service. She loved the Tampa Bay Rays, and, as a breast cancer survivor, was proud to throw out the first pitch at a Ray's game commemorating breast cancer awareness several years ago. Bernice was a devout Catholic, active in the Churches she attended and is an Honorary member of St. Raphael's Council of Catholic Women. Bernice will be remembered for her sparkling blue eyes, the first to volunteer for "kitchen help" for the many organizations she supported and the undying love of her family. The family suggests donations to Hospice of the Suncoast or any of the above-mentioned organizations or St. ROse Church, 309 N, Main St, New Lexington, Ohio 43764. Visitation will be on Tuesday, October 7th, at Brett Funeral Home between 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. with services taking place on Wednesday, October 8th, at St. Paul's Catholic Church at 10:00 a.m. Interment will be in New Lexington Cemetery at a later date.
